The Forward Deployed Engineer Role
A Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) works directly with customers, sitting between engineering, product and consulting. They understand the client's workflow, build or adapt solutions on site, and feed lessons back to the product team.
The role needs technical depth (LLMs, RAG, agents, deployment) plus communication, scoping and change-management skills.
Success is measured by business outcomes — hours saved, revenue, accuracy — not by how advanced the model is.
