AI Agents and Multi-Agent Systems · Lesson 3
Memory in AI Agents
Short-term memory is the current context: the conversation and recent tool results. It is limited by the context window.
Long-term memory persists across sessions. Episodic memory stores past events, semantic memory stores facts about the user or domain (often in a vector store), and procedural memory stores how-to instructions.
Decide what to write, when to summarise, and how to retrieve. Too much memory adds noise; too little makes the agent forgetful.
Key points
- Short-term = context window
- Long-term = stored outside, retrieved when needed
- Episodic, semantic and procedural memory
- Summarise and prune to avoid noise
